The village of Periana is situated 60 kilometres from Malaga and 30 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 547 metres. Periana is a village with panoramic views of the mountain ranges to the right and the Lake Vinuela and the coastline to the south. The streets are steep and sometimes narrow in Moorish style, although the town was rebuilt after an earthquake on Christmas night in 1884. The original Mudejar styled parish church of San Isidro, found in the Plaza de La Lomillaja, also had to be rebuilt. Many prehistoric sites are also in the area.

Periana is renowned for its peaches and a peach fair is held in Periana every summer.
