The resort of Guardamar del Segura is built at the mouth of the Segura river, some 40 kilometres south west of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca. The town was first settled by the Phoenicians but in 1829, the original town was completely destroyed by an earthquake. It was rebuilt nearer to the coast but it then was troubled by the problem of the advancing sands. This was solved by planting pine trees which now form the nature forest called 'Dunas de Guardamar'. The area is now a popular tourist resort with over 12 kilometres of sandy beaches.
