Tamariu is a small former fishing village that is located on the Costa Brava about 150 kilometres from the French-Spanish boarder and 120 kilometres north east of Barcelona. The resort offers a small centre comprising some local-style buildings with a few bars, restaurants and shops, all around the marina. The beach is backed by a short promenade with benches and flower boxes. The beach is a stretch of sand with pebbles at the water's edge and a couple of rocky outcrops. There are many boats pulled up onto the sand towards its centre. Adjoining it is L'Iris beach and around the corner is Fonda beach, a tiny stretch of pebbles bordered by large rocks.

Tamariu is popular with mature, independent, holidaymakers. Evening entertainment is in beach front bars and restaurants, with the main concentration of restaurants along the beach front promenade, serving mainly fish and Catalan dishes. There is a bus service to Palafrugell (from the end of June to mid September), with connections to Girona, Barcelona and other coastal resorts.
