Zaragoza (previously Saragossa in English) is the capital city of the province of Aragon and is the fifth largest city in Spain. The population accounts for about 50 per cent of the population of the whole of Aragon. The city lies on the banks of the River Ebro and its tributaries Huerva and Gállego, and is in a valley with landscapes ranging from desert, to meadows, thick forests and mountains.

There are a number of Moorish buildings in the city, the most important being the Aljaferia which is a large castle/palace which is now the seat of the Aragonese parliament. The Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar was built in 1681 and is the one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in the whole of Spain. There are many other historic buildings in Zaragoza including the 14th century cathedral and parts of the preserved Roman wall.

In 2008, Zaragoza will be host to the next world fair Expo 2008, and the city is bidding for the 2014 winter Olympics, together with the city of Jaca.
