Cala d'Or Information
Just 90 minutes from Palma airport, Cala d'Or is situated on the south east coast of Mallorca. Cala d'Or is a modern resort and was built from an original fishing village. The resort has now spread over approximately five kilometres of small sandy coves and creeks.

The town consists of white houses in an Ibizan style and certain urban rules regarding new buildings have ensured that the style is strictly adhered to. The town has few, if any, high rise buildings. The centre of the town is almost all pedestrianised and has numerous bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Cala d'Or could be described as a more up-market resort in Mallorca as it a popular marina with 380 moorings that attracts those keen on yachting.

Evening entertainment is generally hotel based, although the resort does have a small number of lively bars and discos centred around the pedestrian zone.

Review title: "Downmarket Blackpool"
Travel date: June 2008
Holiday was fantastic but my main gripe is the centre of Cala d'Or. We were self catering so we ate out most nights. The centre of Cala d'Or holds most of the eating places but most of them are rubbish. Think Blackpool but worse so if you want a plastic seven foot zebra overlooking your meal or a five foot John Wayne or people dressed as pirates, then go to the centre.

The food is really rubbish. It is basically get the people in and leave them with rubbish food and then kick them out. The only time they are nice to you is the PR getting you into their places and believe me, the PRs will hunt you down at your hotel and the beaches etc., to the point where it ruins your evening.

So take some advice and avoid the centre. All that glitters is not gold. Dine out further afield at adjacent streets. Avoid the in-house fighting between the bars etc., plus the free sangria is watered down and makes you ill.

Travel date: October 2007
I was a little disappointed at the beaches in Cala d'Or as they were not very clean and man-made. The coves were much smaller than I thought they were going to be and we got bit by some rather large black fish in the sea which was very off putting. The beach had a blue flag up but it didn't live up to its expectations. The sunbathing area was set back a bit from the sea and everyone was packed in like sardines on the sun loungers and it all looked rather tacky, not very attractive I must say.

Cala Esmeralda's beach was a little nicer with cleaner sea.

I have been visiting Mallorca, Cala d'Or specifically, for nearly 20 years in both a family orientated way and as I have grown up and got wrinkly, with friends. It suits both parents and children of all ages. Plenty to do, friendly locals, wonderful climate, clean sea etc. Would, and do! recommend to anyone!

Just returned after a one week break in Cala d'Or and was very disappointed to see that the 'Bodega' restaurant had been taken over by new owners. Although friendly enough, the food was quite disgusting. Advertising mouthwatering spanish tapas, we were served microwaved slop that I wouldn't give to my dogs. Very disappointing but judging from lack of other customers, we should have guessed. Much better restaurants such as 'Es Caliu', 'C'an Trompe', and 'Tapas Y Mas' to name but a few. You have been warned.

We returned to Cala d'or this year for the second year in a row. The place is fantastic, the people are so welcoming. We ate most nights in a great bar called 'The Dumpling'. Great people, fantastic food and really good value for money. I would also recommend 'Grill World' next door to 'The Dumpling'. Will definitely be back next year.

Review title: "Worst Place I Have Ever Been!"
Travel date: April 2007
I have given this place a one as I couldnt find a zero! This is a bodega, commonly found in Spain and Mallorca? It is anything but from serving your food with a cigarette in the owner's mouth and the menu is delicacies of the Balearics - moussaka, jacket potato with sour cream? The chef is German and it caters mostly for Germans - most of the people in there were German, all three of them. It wasn't busy. Food was cold, microwaved and inedible. Oh, another delicacy is, of course, the famous Mallorcian fondue?

Drinks over priced, lack of knowledge of any wines, need I go on - a complete farce.

We visited The Polynesian Bar and Papaya Restaurant which are one of the same. The bar staff were great and friendly. My friend's husband and my partner order a 'zombie' cocktail, which was massive. It took them nearly 2 1/2 hours to drink it, by which time they were completely sozzled. We then ate in the adjoining Papaya restaurant. We ate there probably about four times in all and they even served us at 11.30pm at night - for 12 of us, even though they had just closed. Food is superb and quick. Served by two guys who had the whole restaurant under control. Great kids' meals and great value all around.

Would highly recommend Tony's Bar in Es Forti/Cala Egos area of Cala D'Or. Food lovely and service faultless, waiters are great with children. The prices are also very reasonable compared to main Cala D'Or where we ventured one night to a Mexican restaurant and my husband ended up with food poisoning. Did not like the centre of Cala D'Or at night as we do not like to get continually hassled by people trying to get you into their restaurants. Go to Tony's Bar instead.
