Sitges Information
The town of Sitges lies about 50 kilometres south west of Barcelona. The town was first mentioned in the 10th century. In recent years the population has grown following the opening of the tunnel through the Garraff Massif, which formed a natural barrier between Sitges and Barcelona. Today this is an 'Ibiza' type town with clubs, discotheques, pubs and restaurants, especially favoured by the gay community. Famous for its yearly film festival, Sitges also has 16 beaches on its kilometre long coastline.

What a town, what a stroke of luck finding this place, what a night at the carnival. Sitges is lively all through the summer, but for the carnival in spring, it comes alive for a few days a few months early and twice as manic. Given the weather this year (carnival is linked to Easter - held the weekend before Shrove Tuesday/Rosenmontag - so it was early) things were a bit more subdued from the normal. That was till we stumbled upon Bar Tronquito on Calle San Pedro running towards the beach and sail club from the main street, Les Parellades. Nominally a tapas bar and cafe - this place was party central in the evenings. On the Tuesday night/Wednesday morning - the police finally put a halt on precedings at 5 o'clock. The barful of revellers were chanting 'El Tronquito' and a few choice expressions about the police.

And next morning - at 9 o'clock - they were back on line serving English and continental breakfasts - and the place was the sedate quintessentially spanish cafe. The english fry up is the best, if not only, in town.

For a quite late or a rocking evening, recommend you check it out.
