Lord Byron described Valletta as 'a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen'.

In 1980, the city was named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Today it is the major port of Malta, and is the centre of government of the Republic. It is worth noting that a congestion charge system has been implemented in Valletta.
