Tarragona is the 'capital' of the Costa Dorada, situated some 100 kilometres south of Barcelona on the north east coast of Spain. It is built on a rocky hill, sloping down to the sea. The city was founded in 218 BC and its lay out still follows many of the Roman roads and plazas, with a number of Roman sites still visible. The beaches of the Costa Dorada lie both to the north and south of the city, and there is a working port, which is based on an extension of the sea wall built by the Romans, and is one of the most important ports in Spain.
