This place is great - if you want a 'home from home', basically, English food, bars etc with the bonus of the weather! If you want a more cultured holiday avoid Salou! It took me and my friend three days to find anywhere vaguely Spanish to eat.

Our apartment was on a huge roundabout so peaceful and relaxing it wasn't! Basically Salou reminds me of Great Yarmouth - if you love cheap shops, bars and restaurants blaring 'Coronation Street' or football then you'll love Salou!

I adore Salou. Having visited many worldwide destinations Salou is my favourite.

Reviews I have read mention that its all 'Coronation Street' and reminds people of Yarmouth. Yes it has a 'Brit' end of town but if you wander down to the old town, they probably wouldn't have even heard an English accent. There are lots of nice Spanish run bars.

Beautiful beaches, lovely promenade and fountains. OK, it's not Marbella but its a nice unpretentious family holiday resort and I always feel very safe there. Have a good time if you visit Salou!

Review title: "Best Holiday"
Travel date: July 2006
My family and I are going back to Salou for the seventh time this year. We have been on many holidays in the past such as Tenerife, Portugal, Cyprus and other European destinations but none are a patch on Salou. There is so much to see and do.

The beach is wonderful and there are also smaller coves further up the coast leading up to Cap Salou. Salou is also surrounded by some other lovely places and a must to see is Barcelona where you can visit the Olympic Stadium, the zoo, the city itself and the Nou Camp Stadium which is home to Barcelona football club. Nearer Salou is Cambrils, a lovely little fishing village which has some superb restaurants, particularly good if you like fish. On the other side of Salou is La Pineda, which also has a great beach and a fantastic water park which is safe and has dolphin and sea lion shows. Also the town of Tarragona is worth a visit, particularly for the shops and of course it is only a fifteen minute bus ride to Salou's wonderful theme park, PortAventura where you can spend all day and night riding the coasters and watching shows.

At night, Salou comes alive and has fantastic bars and clubs and restaurants together with a whole range of shops just one after the other. We normally eat our dinner and then work it off by going down the main street and relaxing in the shops. After one or two purchases we go in the bars and to be honest there are only a handful of poor bars. Most of them are brilliant, particularly the 'Victoria' bar, 'Charlie Chaplains' and 'Funky Monkey's' and you tend to find that most of the bars are very child friendly.

We visited Salou last year for the sixth time and are going again shortly. If you have a family, there is no better place than Salou. If there is, I would like to know about it.

My husband and I and our two children visited the Connect Inn for a few meals. The food was delicious with generous portions and the sangria went down a treat. Santa, the owner and his daughter were excellent hosts - very friendly and the service was excellent. It was our favourite restaurant there. We also met Andrew who hands out the flyers for the restaurant. He was a great guy. Regards.

This was our first place to have a meal in. It is so friendly. Santa and his wife Lisa Marie were so friendly and very welcoming, we went back there most of our stay. Food was excellent. Big screen T.V. there to watch while you ate with all the English programmes you watch at home. You also get to use their internet free, of course only if you have eaten there. We loved it there and I highly recommend it.

I have visited Salou many a time and over the last five years, I would have to say I have found myself spending most of my holiday in the Robin Hood. Very welcoming staff, most of whom of speak very good English considering they are Spanish! Entertainment at night is top class. The karaoke takes you late into the night. They also have 'Stars In Their Eyes' competitions at the end of the week and quizzes too.

I remember the day when the kids would get up and dance every night to the party songs. Very family orientated business, plenty of games machines, two internet terminals and two pool tables to keep the kids busy whilst the adults enjoy the entertainment at night!

SALOU RESTUARANTS/PUBS
There are plenty of restaurants around and we would recommend:

1) The Spaghetti House - good for pizzas, pasta but we enjoyed the desserts even more. Service is slow but the food is great and quick!

2) Uncle Sams - Good for burgers, nachos etc and a great all round menu with very down-to-earth (friendly) staff. Very good value for money.

3) Taj Mahal - Next to Uncle Sam's is a tasty Indian restaurant. Service is not great but the food hits the spot!

4) The Butler - next to the Spaghetti house is a good English pub with English television is you're a soap addict.

5) Shankleys - Opposite Uncle Sam's is another English pub and a must for Liverpool fans.

6) The George & Dragon - Good for food and English television.

7) The Old Brown Cow - Family business - great food and service.

Landed in Salou on Friday. On the first night we had thunder, lightning and floods but we headed out anyway and landed in 'Christy's' and to our surprise, there was a tall leprechaun from Derry 'stripping'! We were happy! We had a savage night with lots of free shots. Class bar staff - Tom Cruise 'cocktail' - eat your heart out! Every night for a week we went there. We also visited other bars which were good - 'Danny Boy's' '007' 'Bus Stop' etc., but it was hard to beat 'Christy's'. Couldn't have enjoyed myself any more and hope to go out next May to try and get a job in an Irish bar!

The staff know your needs exactly when you enter the door and they are met 100 per cent. The proprietor, Lenny, is an absolute gentleman and has on his team the most hard working team. So child orientated - 0-80 - as there is a child in all of us but if you want to just sit and soak it all in, it's for you also. Heard much about this place and first couple of nights I went in were quiet but friendly bar staff passed the nights. Alas, first morning I went in for breakfast I was astonished at the severe lack of courtesy when ordering breakfast. I was talked to like something that the girl had washed off her hands and sadly I just left without ordering. Sorry, but as far as I can see maybe this is why the bar is so quiet in the evenings. 'Jimmy's' is the best karaoke bar in Salou. He has thousands of songs. I wanted to sing Lochlomand Rinrig style but he didn't have it and when I went back the following night he told me he got that song, which is cool. He took the time to get that song just for me.

My daughter loved 'Jimmy's'. Everyone is in for a good time if they go there and its not just karaoke - he puts on shows too. Rik Andrews is a must - he's on Fridays. We went to other karaoke bars like 'Idols'. I didn't enjoy it - I felt the place was a bit smelly and he didn't have all the up to date songs like 'Jimmy's'.

So if you like a good singsong and you want to go to a clean bar, 'Jimmy's' is the place to go.

Travel date: September 2006
My family and I have been going to Salou since 1994. We try and go back every year as we love it there so much. 'The Rover's Return' is such a great place to go if you have children because the staff really know how to entertain them. They do all sorts of games with them such as musical bumps and pass the pie. The staff will sometimes tell the children to go and get either mam or dad and bring them to the dance floor, then tell the children to go and sit down, leaving the parents to play pass the pie. The game is simple you pass the pie to the person next to you and when the music stops you put the pie in the face of the person on your left. It's a very messy game but it's fun.

They have all sorts of entertainment on for the adults too such as Rick Andrew, an hypnotist, very good, plus bingo, pub quizzes, karaoke and some Polynesian dancers with very fit bodies.

It is such a nice and friendly bar. If when you go there doesn't appear to be any where to sit, the staff will move people around to make room for you.

Because we have been going for such a long time the owner of the bar, Lenny, is such a good friend and whenever we walk in he shouts 'My locals from Hull are back!'

We always have such an enjoyable time in Salou and at 'The Rover's Return' and would seriously recommend it to anyone on a family holiday.

The owners are Scottish (hence friendly, down to earth and have a braw accent) and for all intents and purposes know how to serve you a taste of home.

I love Spanish weather, cheap cigs and scenery but I do love my Nescafe and real tea. My young son dragged us everynight to the Bees Knees. He loved the mac 'n' cheese.

I made some really good friends in this place, some will hopefully be for life! Most of the clubs in Salou just tend to play r'n'b but Snoepy's is a little more individual, has a better mix, and the staff are pleasant. Better watch out for the security at the entrance to the club though, you can't go in until you have a drink in your hand! Amazing! 10 out of 10! Out of this world!

PortAventura is the best! It beats Alton Towers on some rides (i.e. the rapids, runaway train and Rita), beats Terra Mitica as it is bigger (although these theme parks are amazing too!). It is more than amazing as there are a lot of rides and a lot of fantastic shows. Quite a few rides are gentle and suited for children, others are big and very, very fast! The queues weren't that long when we went. You definitely get your money's worth. I advise people to get a multiple day pass (consecutive days though) for 63 euros - definitely worth it as you need at least two days!

The food prices are rather dear (in my opinion) and so are the drinks, until you actually get given them and then you think wow! A small coke costs 2.35 euros but it looks like it could be a large coke! Buy the candy floss on a stick - it will be bigger than your head!! Oh, and if you are buying any ride pictures, I wouldn't leave it until the end of the day, buy the picture within at least an hour or two hours because, like what happened with ours on 'Furius Baco', our picture had been deleted by the end of the day because of little memory left and the ride being so popular! The pictures are about seven euros which is very cheap considering! I also advise you to take any earrings out etc. on the 'Furius Baco' as it goes so fast (I mean meag fast - it's awesome). Go on it, experience it. I loved the firework display at the end too - well worth it. I'm so returning in the near future. Love PortAventura!

The theme park is so cool! Loads of good runs. The roller coasters are the best. If you are a fan of thrills, go for sure! There are a pile of runs. You couldn't go for one day and you would have to go for a good couple to get round it!

The food is beautiful. Ideal for teens and adults. For little kids there are good runs for them. The fireworks are amazing and the shows.

The PortAventura water park is brill. Very good and not that deep if you can't swim. Good for children and babies! Class for teens and adults as loads to do in both. You will never get bored as there is always something to do!

DAY TRIPS

Do Barcelona first as your bus discount book gives you two for one tickets for Port Aventura! Do not visit Barcelona on a Monday as all the museums are closed! Do visit Barcelona on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, as on these days there is an evening fountain show.

1. Barcelona
Trip to Barca is a must! Forget the reps trip, its massively overpriced -50 euros! We got the train. We had no problems from Salou station (seven euros from hotel in taxi). Buy return train tickets at 11 euros per adult and enjoy the one and a half hour train ride. Sit on the right if you want to see the best views/beaches. Get off at Sants (Barcelona) station, it's the first one in Barca. Step outside the station and look right for the open top bus stood at the bus top (called Bus Turistic). If one is not there, then one appears every ten minutes. Get on the bus and pay the guide/driver 17 euros per adult. There are three zones - red, blue and green, you can use them all and change at certain points. We started and finished on the blue which took us back to the station to catch the train home. They will give a map and discount book. Remember you can hop on and off at all the main sights. Brilliant... don't miss the dancing fountains in the evening. Also well worth a good look are the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, the Olympic Stadium, Park Guell and best of all if you're a footy fan, the Nou Camp. Look out for the holographic photograph on the pitch at Nou Camp. Remember to use your discount book at most the sights. Tourist information is underground at Placa Catalunya and they are very helpful. Shopping in Barca is fantastic also, particularly around Las Ramblas! Only down side is that last train from Barcelona was at 9pm. NB Your return train ticket may not work in the automatic machine (ours didn't), don't panic, show the guard your ticket and he'll let you through.

2. Port Aventura
Port Aventura was also excellent. I suggest though that you bring enough to cover food expenses as the food is snacky rather than filling. Limited choice for vegetarians. Even so there is something for everyone; the queues were not long, longest 20 minutes. The park was very clean and tidy but smoking appears to be a national obsession! The firework and laser show at 11.30pm is not to be missed although the crowds start gathering around the lake from around 10.30pm so you need to be in that area early to get a good viewing point. http://www.portaventura.com/

3. Sunday Market

Bonavista has a Sunday market for cloths, shoes, fruit and vegetables, gifts etc. Don't spend 13 euros on the rep's trip as the local bus will take you there (and back) for around five euros! NB All buses/coaches drop you about five or ten minutes walk from the market!

4. Supermarkets

The supermarkets are plentiful, the best being the Michaelangelo chain.

I had a rubbish holiday because of my hotel 'Hilltop Molinos' but the Aquapolis splash pool was great and helped to lift our spirits. You didn't have to queue and they had so much to do there for everyone, even swimming with seals and dolphins etc. Great.
