Puerto Rico Information
Puerto Rico is built at the mouth of a valley, on the south western coast of Gran Canaria and is reputed to have the best climate on the island. It started as a small fishing village but has grown into one of the most popular family resorts on the island, with the steep valley sides being covered in hotels and apartments. The fishing harbour has become a marina, next to which is the small beach with golden sand from the Sahara. Inland from the beach can be found many bars and restaurants, as well as a tropical garden.

A resort built in two valleys, so it is very hilly and care needs to be taken when choosing your hotel or apartments if you are not able to walk up and down hills easily. However, because the resort is built on the hillsides, it means that all hotels are tiered and have great views along the valley to the sea.

This is a good family resort and probably would not appeal to those looking for a raving nightlife. Try Playa del Ingles as there are lots and lots and lots of bars in this resort, based in a number of commercial centres, including the Yumbo and Kasbah.

There are several good restaurants in the main commercial centre. We particularly enjoyed 'The Balcon Canario' and 'Meson Canario' on the far side of the centre facing onto the road. The food is good and so was the service in both restaurants, but, if you want a really good paella, go to 'The Balcon' (it has to be pre-ordered but it is worth it). There is also 'San Miguel's' on the ground floor and 'Si Signor' (a Chinese buffet) on the top floor at the back of the centre, especially if you are looking for a cheaper meal.

The beach front is lovely, but can be very crowded with sun-beds along the pier as well as on the sand. Just along from the Puerto Rico beach is Amadores, about a three euro taxi ride and this is an even better beach. You can walk along a coastal path from Puerto Rico but this will take you about 30-40 minutes.

Again, there are some great restaurants on the sea front, the best one being 'Oscars'. This place is expensive but the food is fantastic as is the service - well worth a visit.

Another place to go is to Puerto Mogan. You can get there by ferry or by bus. This place is really beautiful and is still quite unspoilt.

The main problem that we had with the resort was that whenever you went anywhere, you were constantly being approached by people trying to sell you things or asking you to eat in their restaurant. Each restaurant has a 'catcher' outside who will try to get you into the restaurant. They are normally quite polite and leave you alone once you have said no, but it can become a little tiring.

The worst pests by far are ANFI touts, trying to get you to visit one of their time-share resorts. They seem to hunt in groups and if you get past one, another one is waiting round the corner. One day we were approached by six different touts in a matter of twenty minutes. If we go to Gran Canaria again we are thinking of getting t-shirts printed that say 'ANFI - No Thanks' or maybe something not so polite.

We would definitely return to Gran Canaria and possibly Puerto Rico, but this is only because we tend not to go to the same resort more than once .

We have been holidaying in Puerto Rico for many years. The island and the people are lovely. The thing that spoils Puerto Rico are the time share touts. They were worse this year than any other year. Some of them were quite aggressive. They are every where. You can't enjoy a walk around the harbour or the beach. Sadly this has put us both off going again. We really hope the powers that be will deal with these people so that holiday makers can relax and enjoy this lovely island.

I honeymooned in Puerto Rico in August. We stayed at the top of the mountain and we only left to go the bottom once. There was plenty to do during the day if you just want a relaxing beer and plenty places to eat.

Highly recommend the 'Chill Bar'. We were in there every night and were never disappointed. Mark and Leo are a great team. I would definitely go back and this time take the kids!

Best thing to do is to visit other places around. So easy as the local buses are easy to use and regular. Visit Mogan on the bus - the ride is very scary but brill, over the hills, and Mogan is beautiful. It's only just over two euros each way for two persons on the bus.

Go to Las Palmas. The city is worth it, 6.45 euros each way for two persons. Last direct bus back is 8.15 but you can get one that goes through other places on the way back to Puerto Rico about 11.00 p.m.

Playa del Ingles is about 40 minutes on the bus and is the biggest resort on Gran Canaria. Worth visiting as loads of areas to go to. Yumbo area is good. Last bus is outside at 11.48 p.m.

In Puerto Rico not a lot to go to after two or three nights, but recommend the 'Bora Bora' bar on the upstairs floor of main shopping centre and the Irish bar on the corner. It serves good food. There is a big bar/live music place at the back of Mcdonalds that has different acts each night of week but repeats each one on a weekly basis. Good though, great Elvis and Bob Marley acts, and a good soul duo as well.

My partner and I are flying out to Puerto Rico in two weeks time. We booked the holiday up six months ago and were told some really dodgy comments by people. We are glad that we found this site as it had put the record straight!

We were told that we would be mugged, stolen from and left in the lurch. But obviously looking at these reviews, that's not the case. I've never been abroad before as I'm too scared of flying! But my partner has been many times and I'm now looking forward to our holiday thanks to all of your reviews! So thanks everyone, it's been a huge relief!

I went to Puerto Rico last September and I am planning on going again in October 2008. I thought it was a fantastic holiday and I would recomend it to everyone.

Puerto Rico is a family orientated place and there are things to do for everyone. The night life was brilliant and if you have children, like me, then you can take them to a quieter part in the centre. There's a bar called 'Hooters' that you can sit outside and have cocktails and it isn't disturbed by teenagers. I honestly thought it was amazing and the whole place has a ten out of ten from me!

First time I have been to Puerto Rico and it was OK, only OK. In the day and night the people that are trying to get you into a bar or restaurant was really bad, worst I have ever seen and I go away twice a year. They hound you in packs and I can say that because I sat at the bar in Bora Bora with my wife and when this family said no thanks to one girl she pointed at two lads who then moved in, followed by two girls. I mean the woman had a baby about one year old . They are not going to sit in a bar with booming music, yes?

During the day the touts are blocking the beach so you have to get past them. I would not go back, sorry and I do mean it. It's a nice resort ruined by hasslers.

I love Puerto Rico. It is so good. I am going to live over there in July. It is absolutely wicked. Only recommended for young people though and families, not the elderly, as there are lots of loud bars and hills. Everything is so cheap over there and a great holiday overall. I have been about 15 times and now I going to live there!

Puerto Rico is certainly not a hell hole, its the only resort I've ever gone back to and I've been to many! I love the white buildings lining the valley. If you look around, you will find some excellent restaurants.

The only thing I would point out is that the place is much better between November and April as you don't get all the lager louts.

You should take the ferry to Puerto Mogan. Its a nice little village just 30 minutes up the coast and you will see dolphins on the way if you are lucky. Amadores beach is the best in the whole of the Canaries, lovely white sand and blue sea. Of all the resorts in Gran Canaria, this is the prettiest in my opinion. I miss it like crazy! I'll be going back one day.

Me and my boyfriend were looking for a relaxing holiday, and that is what we got! The food was great, drinks were quite cheap, the only problem was that our apartment was at the top of the hill, but taxis were cheap and walking down it wasn't too bad either. We found the beach in Puerto Rico a bit busy, so we got a taxi to the Amerdores beach where everything was a bit more relaxed. There are a lot of mountains and hills but what would you expect form a volcanic island. The only bad part of the holiday was coming home!!!!

Review title: "Reply to Reviewer (Hell Hole On Earth)"
Travel date: June 2005
This is a reply to the reviewer who found Puerto Rico a 'hell hole on earth'. There are marinas and beaches in and close to Puerto Rico, with lots of activities such as the dolphin searches, scuba diving, snorkelling, sport fishing, pedaloes, jet skis, parascending and lots more, the beautiful Puerto Rico and Amadores beaches, tennis, water parks, putting greens, to mention a few. All the land excursions, safaris, mountain trips - too many to mention.

This is a volcanic island in the canaries, where you are bound to find black volcanic mountains. The local beer is 90 cents a pint in many bars and you can get a great meal for around £6. There aren't very many days the sun doesn't shine here on this beautiful tropical island. There are three shopping centres here. The shops, bars and restaurant prices can't be anywhere near as expensive as London. We have lots of very happy visitors come back year after year and also a lot of Brits are happy to live here in wonderful Puerto Rico.

Black mountainous hell hole with nothing to see but the sea and one shopping centre containing all bars, restaurants and pricey, trashy shops. Netto supermarket charges exorbitant prices, 50% higher than elsewhere on the island.

Boredom was a huge problem, especially on all the dull, windy days when the sun did not shine. Most pools are unheated and freezing cold. Local beer is 3.30 euros.

The bar staff are really friendly and to top it all, they have proper bathrooms not a tiny cubicle. We were in for the last ten days of our holidays (didn't find it until the fourth day) and they made our hols. You have got to go. I can't wait until September.

Friendly and warm welcome. Known as the Welsh bar. Located on the upper floor. Anyone popping in say 'hi' to my old mate Hayden. Relax and enjoy. The staff will look after you.

Spent ten out of our 12 night break at the Barbacoa. We just loved it. Some material a bit raunchy for the kids but the place was packed every night and my eight year old didn't want to go anywhere else.

Having been to Puerto Rico three times now, I can say with some authority that the best night out is at ‘Tiffany's' music bar. Situated on the upper level of the main shopping centre, it is a very lively, friendly pub. The evening's entertainment gets underway quite late in the evening but is well worth the wait. Steve the DJ is a very amusing bloke and does a pop quiz every night. Free drinks for correct answers. He also plays any old rubbish.

Gary and Sally own this bar. They will cater for all your needs. Its right up at the end of the commercial centre, next to 'M and M's' bar. They are always busy and never chase you home. A good selection of all your favourite drinks. You need to go and see them as they will make you very welcome.

Thanks all at the Karaoke bar ....The tavern. My friend and I had a most marvellous time here thanks to Tim the D.J.and to all the staff. As well as organising the karaoke, he was a very good singer and there was never a dull moment. I will be back. I just hope the staff are the same. Cheers to all. Merry Xmas

When at Amadores beach, don't miss 'Sinatra's' beach side cafe/bar. Tracey serves up lovely food that is British sourced. We had a lovely Sunday dinner that was delicious and massive. Recommended - five star!

'Joker Disco', well what can I say? It is fantastic. Top night out. I went to a few bars around the shopping centre, well, most of them. There are people outside inviting you in to their bar saying what a good night you will have, but you really need to try 'Joker Disco'. It is in the lower level shopping centre, Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria.

We were lucky enough to be only five minutes walk away from this quite remarkable club .We went in it every night till closing and enjoyed the compere Mal Lawerence as he did a fab job at the beginning of the evening trying to get a half full sober house warmed up! A difficult job. He was very friendly and acknowledged us every night, as did the waiting staff who served us at our table. We were never made to wait! Can't wait to come back!!
