Puerto de La Cruz is the second largest town in Tenerife and is situated on the northern coast of the island. It was founded in the early 17th century as a fishing port, and over the years the harbour grew to deal with the export of sugar and wine. The oldest building dates back to 1620 and the old part of the town still has many old buildings, churches, and narrow cobbled streets. The main industry now is tourism, with the new part of town having many modern shops and hotels. There are two large beaches with black volcanic sand, and the Lago de Martianez, a lido, designed by César Manrique, with eight swimming pools, bars and restaurants. The town has many gardens, one of the most interesting being the Botanical Garden. Also Puerto de La Cruz is the home of Loro Parque, a zoo best known for its 200 species of parrots, which is visited by tourists from all over the island.
