Alcoutim Information
The picturesque historic small town of Alcoutim is situated on the Guadiana River, which is the border with Spain, and is about 32 kilometres from the coast, and 65 kilometres from Faro Airport, in the north east corner of the province of Algarve. Inhabited since 4000BC and having been occupied by, amongst others, the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, the town has a number of historic buildings, including the ruins of a 14th century castle, and a church built in the 16th century. Its importance was greatest when most trade was done on the river, as it lies at the tidal extremity of the Guadiana. Some 200 metres away, across the river is the Spanish town of Sanlucar, almost a mirror image of Alcoutim.
