The current population is about 270,000 in the south and 85,000 in the TRNC. Nicosia became the capital of Cyprus in the tenth century, although its history goes back to at least 670BC.

Today Nicosia is a modern city with many shops, restaurants, entertainment centres, museums and cultural and sporting events. It is also home to the two most successful football teams on the island.
