Kyrenia (Girne in Turkish) is situated on the northern coast of Turkish Cyprus and is best known for its harbour dominated by the byzantine Kyrenia Castle. Originally a fishing harbour, it is now mainly used by pleasure craft and is surrounded by many bars and restaurants. The town has a history going back some 6,000 years and has many buildings of historical interest, in addition to the castle. The present population of some 52,000 is made up of Turkish Cypriots and British expatriates. Kyrenia has many long beaches and has the Besparmak ('Five Fingered') mountain range as a backdrop. A few kilometres from the town is a larger harbour used by commercial shipping and ferries from Turkey.
