It is also the name of the municipality which includes the city, which is one of the smallest in the Principality of Asturias with a total area of 25.34 square kilometres. Situated in the estuary of Avilés, in the northern central area of the Asturian coast, it has a national seaport and is close to beaches such as Salinas.
