Only ten kilometres south east of Seville is the town of Alcalá de Guadaira. It used to be known as Alcalá de Los Panaderos (Alcalá of the bakers) because it provided most of Seville's bread. The town is located close to the banks of the Guadaira river and since the time of the Moors, there have been watermills here taht woere used in the production of flour. Today, Alcalá de Guadaira is known for its castle and extensive defensive walls. One of the most important fortifications in Seville province, the castle was constructed by the Almohads and modified by the Christians, who conquered the town in the mid 13th century under Fernando III.
