Limassol (Lemesos) is the second largest city on Cyprus and is situated on the south coast of the island. Its current population is around 177,000 and it is an important commercial and tourist area. The city's history goes back to 2000BC but it came to importance in 1190 when Richard the Lionheart captured the city and married there. Since that time it has been under the control of many different invaders, until 1878 when it came under British control. This lasted until the island gained its independence in 1960. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 the population of Limassol expanded greatly with displaced Greek Cypriots from the north of the island.

Limassol is the largest trading port on Cyprus and has two harbours, the oldest (and smallest) now being used mainly by fishing boats. The town is also the centre of wine production being surrounded by the wine growing region in the foothills of the Troodos mountains.

Being known as the 'City of Fun', Limassol has a lively night life and an established tourist industry, with many hotels along its ten miles of beaches.
