Arantzazu |
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Arantzazu is an example of contemporary Basque art and has become one of the most important spiritual centres in the region of Guipuzcoa. The first references to this sanctuary were made by the historian Esteban de Garibay. In 1468, while shepherd Rodrigo de Baltzategi was tending a flock of sheep, he came across a statue of Santa Marķa beside a cowbell on a hawthorn bush. Astounded, he asked her 'Arantzan zu'? (Is it you in the hawthorn?). This finding was hailed as the sign of a miracle. The monastery suffered both accidental and intentional fires on numerous occasions: 1553, 1622 and 1934 and had to be rebuilt every time.
