The monastery of Santa María La Real, built in the 11th century, is important as the burial-place of Spanish kings and has been compared to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (45 kilometres north west of Madrid).
Najera is a stopping point on the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), which is the pilgrimage to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in north westernmost Spain where the apostle Saint James the Great is said to be laid to rest.
