It has varied landscapes: the plains of El Esparragal mainly dedicated to intensive agriculture and the upland area of Cabezo de La Jara. The area is of great environmental interest and contains predominantly Mediterranean type vegetation and woodland, Mediterranean pine and wild olive woods. Among its wildlife are the Mediterranean tortoise, the eagle-owl, and several birds of prey. Additionally, the town has important industries serving tourism, pottery production, carpets, fabric and articles made from esparto grass.

The old part of the town is divided into various zones: the centre is gathered round a hill consisting of cave houses, the old part straddles the Nogalte gully and the modern part which stretches along the N-340 trunk road.
