It is 30 kilometres south west of Malaga and 26 kilometres from the airport. Fuengirola reaches for over ten kilometres along the beach, extending for one kilometre inland at its widest point. The promenade is lined with open-air cafes and bars.

The resort has many high-rise buildings and caters for mainly British tourists, most of whom are families, middle aged and mature couples, as well as golfers.

There are also many restaurants with fish and shellfish as the local specialities. There are frequent buses between Marbella, Torremolinos, Malaga and Mijas, as well as frequent trains every half hour throughout the day to Torremolinos and Malaga, with a stop at the airport.
