The island of Formentera is the smallest inhabited island in the Balearics. It is situated some 20 kilometres south of Ibiza and is about 90 square kilometres in size. Due to the size and shape of the island, it does not have an airport, and can only be reached by ferry from the ports of Ibiza. The capital is Sant Francesc Xavier, but the most visited area is around Es Pujols, where the main tourist area is situated. There are many long sandy beaches on Formentera, which is mainly flat apart from a hilly area in the centre of the island.
