La Gomera is one of the smallest of the Canary Islands, lying to the south west of Tenerife. It is almost circular in shape, the distance from the north to the south of the island being 20 kilometres. The land slopes steeply down from the Garajonay mountain to the sea, with many steep valleys and ravines. The centre of the island is the Garajonay national park, with rainforests and many places of natural beauty. The island has a small airport, with flights by a local operator to and from the airport in the north of Tenerife, otherwise access to the island is by ferry from Tenerife.
