The Algarve is the most important tourist area of Portugal and its regional 'capital' is Faro. It is situated at the southern end of the Iberian peninsula and has a southern coastline of 155 kilometres stretching from the Spanish border to the western coast of Portugal. The region is hilly with deep valleys and beautiful beaches, and it shares its climate with that of southern Spain, with more hours of sunshine than California. There are many famous golf courses in the Algarve.
