Review title: "Great Location"
Travel date: June 2008
We arrived about midnight and were met by a man who gave us our room key in an envelope and practically shoved us into a lift. We did not check in as such and they never took copies of our passports which other hotels have done.

Our party of two adults and a four year old were given room 126, which was on the first floor and had a good view over the pool, which we had requested when we booked. The apartment itself was quite adequate for our stay - a bit basic and maybe in need of a coat of paint, but it didn't affect our holiday at all.

The location of the apartments were great - a two minute walk to the beach and ten to 15 minutes to the rather tacky Europa Shopping Centre. We found the beach was rather small and was packed on certain days, mainly with people wearing socks, sandals, shorts and t-shirts while sunbathing! The Europa Centre was terrible - the restaurants did not have a nice atmosphere and the bars played the same music every night, although the waiters in the 'Bora Bora' bar were really friendly and made a fuss of our daughter every night. The food was OK and we recommend 'Pinocchio's' the Italian. We noticed that one restaurant constantly had queues of people every night so we decided to try it - 'San Miguel's Steak House'. What a mistake - we ordered fillet steak and it was the only bad meal we had the whole week. If I had a dog, I wouldn't have given it to them.

Whatever you do, do not get tricked into going to the five star resort in Anfi. We were promised a day out with free taxis/lunch in the purpose built hotel as long as we gave them 90 minutes of our time to 'look round'. We were there for over four hours being 'sold' a time share and ended up being ignored by a rather rude saleswoman after we didn't agree to buy. We ended up leaving with my daughter in tears. The only positive thing to come out of this was that for going we got free tickets to the water park in Puerto Rico which saved us nearly £60.

One final thing. We asked the receptionist for a late checkout. He said he needed our room - he didn't even check which room we were in. We checked out eight hours before the bus was due to collect us, we watched our room all day from the poolside and nobody had been in at all to clean it.

All-in-all, we didn't have a bad holiday at the Portonovo as we only paid £500 for three of us. We just didn't like Puerto Rico and won't be going back. We prefer Lanzarote, but are trying Zante next year.

Review title: "We Love Staying Here"
Travel date: November 2007
We stay at the Portonovo about two to three times a year and we love it. The location is great (no hills to walk up and down), the pool is fab being as the time of year we go there are never any kids there!

The apartments are OK, very clean, although the bathrooms could be updated. Shops and bars are close at hand as is the beach. Can't wait to go again.

Review title: "Less Noisy At Easter!"
Travel date: August 2006
This was our second visit to these apartments. Plus points: overlook the harbour, short walk to the beach and shops, all one flat level, no steps to climb to anywhere! Basic furniture but clean and tidy.

Not so good points: Very noisy in August! There is a road in front of the apartments, one to the side and one that runs along the back! Builders are up early and their cement lorries are very loud. No air conditioning, which wasn't a problem at Easter but when its 30+ at night.. They are building a car park just in front of the hotel as well. If you have a choice of apartment try getting second floor in the middle of the block. Still it's better than climbing down 700+ steps to get to the beach and a taxi back!

Review title: "Portonovo Apartments"
Travel date: February 2006
Great apartment, quiet, on street level and overlooking the marina. Kitchen equipment: kettle, toaster, fridge freezer, coffee percolator and fruit juicer. No bath but excellent large shower cubicle. Good maid service five times a week. Supermarket and good restaurants nearby. Pool area in need of some new beds and more sunshades. Very hilly resort but enjoyable and extremely clean. A must is to visit Puerto Mogan.

Review title: "Don't Touch It With A Bargepole"
Travel date: July 2005
The apartments are being renovated. Thomson never mentioned this. The constant jack hammer and tile cutting was bad enough and the double room apartments are above the shops. Rooms 151 to 148 are above the refrigeration units for the shops and the noise is horrendous, the children couldn't sleep. The receptionist was a particularly rude and surly individual and was not in the least bit helpful.

The apartments have been refitted to a reasonable, but not great standard and the maid service is non existent. The toilets for the poolside and the restaurant where the same and were disgusting with one constantly blocked.

The number you get from Thomson to contact the rep out of hours is a call centre and no one gets back to you.

The resort is ok, the location of the apartments is fine but the actual apartment complex is not good. If you intend booking a twin room apartment, check that you do not get anything above room 150 on the first floor.

Review title: "We Have Rented Here For Two Years"
Travel date: February 2005
Everyone is friendly, the staff efficient, the location is brilliant - harbour on doorstep, beach two minutes, commercial centre a simple ten minute walk. Taxis come and go at will and are so cheap. We eat out because it's cheaper than eating in!!

Recommended.
