"Worth Checking Out"

The hotel is situated on top of a hill just to the right as you enter the Puerto Rico area, and has a Spanish rating of one key (AT), while our travel agency gave it four stars. The location of the hotel is at the end of a road, and therefore virtually no traffic. It is surrounded by wild nature, perfect for people who want to make long or short walks. Also, the Balito beach is within reach by walking a dirt road directly from the hotel.
The apartments are spacious, bright, and inviting. The veranda of our apartment was overlooking the pool area as well as the splendid views of Puerto Rico. If you have visitors, they will have to sneak through the bedroom in order to get to the veranda though.
The kitchen is equipped with only basic necessities. No coffee brewer, no toaster, no mixers. And the frying pan was quite bulky at the bottom and therefore quite unstable on the stove. You can, however, rent a toaster for ten euros a week. Our apartment was on the third floor, and with no elevators, we were gasping for breath as we reached our destination. Not to be recommended for elderly people with a lot of luggage, but wheels on the suitcases may help a little.
Adjacent to the reception, there's a well equipped typical Spanish mini-market where you can get all the basic necessities you will need day and night, but not at a discount price. Since the distance to the nearest shopping mall is only a ten minutes' downhill walk away, you probably will have saved the double fare of a taxi ride back home, which you will get for less than two euros.
There is also an internet terminal in the hotel lobby, charging one euro for 15 minutes - the most expensive I found on the island. An alternative is at the nearest shopping centre where one euro will let you surf the net for 40 minutes.
Breakfast is ok - typical British with beans, sausages, eggs, etc. which varied pleasantly from day to day. There was a sign warning against these dishes as they were hot, but the sausage my wife tried was anything but hot. Nothing for a spoiled Scandinavian in other words, but there is no reason to leave the breakfast hungry. There are several selections for hot drinks from a dispenser. Only one type of milk and one type of white bread was available in addition to rolls.
The pool area is one of the better ones. Apart from the main pool, there is one for children, and a hot spa basin. Plenty of sunbathing chairs which are cleaned every morning, and also a perfect place for children, with plenty of playing equipment for smaller children, including a small fenced football yard.
You also have to pay for using the TV - one cent per minute. Only Eurosport and CNN were the English speaking channels we found apart from a music channel. And no Scandinavian channels, albeit the hotel seems to cater primarily to Scandinavian tourists.
The people in the reception were pleasant and helpful, but when one started talking to me staring at something else, you are made aware of the fact that some claims of professionalism at the hotels on Gran Canaria may have been somewhat exaggerated. But by and large, they are courteous people. Rooms are cleaned five days a week well as new towels are provided. All done by very pleasant maids who performed their job to our fullest satisfaction.
Conclusion: A nice place for people with small children who want a safe place away from cars and traffic. Also an excellent place for people who plan to spend much of their holiday out walking in the nature. For people with a heart condition: think twice.
