Review title: "Do Not Go!"
Travel date: August 2008
Just arrived home from Tenerife. Definitely wouldn't go back to these apartments. Our room was tiny and there were stains all over the bed. The smell from the bathroom was disgusting! It took four times before being fixed and at that was still bad!

People tried to enter our room at night! For two young girls, that was very scary! Also, the brochure doesn't tell you that the hotel is right next to a hospital. Noise is terrible and definitely wouldn't recommend families to go here!

Pool wasn't very clean. In the two weeks we spent here, our bed sheets were changed once, floors weren't washed at all and empty beer cans in the wardrobe. After we paid a balance of £2,630, we were expecting so much more. Definitely wouldn't return to the Columbus!

Avoid this hotel! This hotel needs knocking down and re-building! This place is in serious need of repair - leaks everywhere and cracks all over the place.

I stayed on the fourth floor of the first block (above reception) with a pool view on an all-inclusive basis. The rooms were cleaned everyday, beds made and clean towels left. The cleaners were very good.

Reception staff are very unhelpful and when I reported a leak in the main entertainment room, it was just shrugged off, even though it was dripping all over people. Some staff in the Columbus bar (non all-inclusive bar) were unhelpful and seem to charge different prices for different people? The all-inclusive bar (La Tasca) is situated at the back of the hotel and is probably 50-60 metres from the entertainment room which is unsuitable. Once at La Tasca, you can only get your own drink and not one for a friend who is also all-inclusive that is saving your seat in the entertainment room. Pool snacks available from La Tasca between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. were pathetic - they consist of ice cream and cakes from the day before's restaurant buffet and a ham and cheese toastie. These were not actually pool side snacks, because they couldn't be taken out of La Tasca, therefore they're just 'snacks'?

I also found that security was very good during the day when a certain security guard who could speak and understand English was on duty, but at night time when a different security guard, that couldn't understand English, was on duty it was awful and you would often see them looking/walking the opposite way when gangs of rowdy kids would appear and then be aggressive towards families having a quiet drink outside by the pool on the night time.

I also found that the price of the services in the hotel was terrible. Four euros for a washing machine and four euros for a tumble dryer. The internet service is one euro per ten minutes when 100 yards down the road it is one euro per hour! This is also the first hotel I have ever had to pay to watch a television. Sure enough, as the brochure says, the rooms all have televisions, but it doesn't say that you have to pay to use them!

The pool tables are of rubbish quality so I recommend the Celtic pub around the corner where customers can play pool for free. The pool tables at the Columbus are two euros per game! When this holiday was booked, we were also told this was a 'family hotel', in a lively part of town. When sitting in the hotel one early evening a 'Freestyle' rep came and set up a stool and explained to me that it was actually an 18-30's hotel! Overall I am disgusted with the hotel and will be going back to the travel agency I booked it with. I will not be going back here again and maybe not back to Tenerife.

The Columbus Hotel was good, comfortable beds, made everyday and was clean. Bar staff friendly and one drink per person? We were able to buy for others. Bit noisy in the early hours with people coming home from clubs, but if you go to the main clubbing resort, what do you expect?

Self catering rooms were basic but nice enough, Nicer than rooms I've been in before. Hotel itself inside was really nice. Any reason not to go back would be because of the place itself not the hotel because of night times. Watch and sunglasses sellers hassling you everywhere you go and club workers trying to get you in their club and sell you offers on drinks got too annoying and muggings going on as well. All in all, wasn't great but wouldn't rule out going again.

Just had two weeks at this unhappy place. Rooms dirty, i.e., noticed our feet were dirty (black) as they never mop the floors. There was spit on the bathroom wall when we arrived and it looked like it had been there for weeks and was still there when we left.

Food was rubbish and expensive, drinks seemed to be charged on the look of your face. Talking to all inclusive guests, they were very unhappy too.

Management miserable and unhelpful. Treated as second class monkeys. On the last day my wife had a bottle perfume stolen. On chatting to other guests they had been robbed as well, on their last day, had reported it to the desk but were just told 'tough'.

We have been in lots of hotels in Spain etc. We will never go back to the Columbus hotel again or recommend it. I'm a down to earth welder not a snob, but worked hard for this holiday and feel robbed and let down by Thompson and their reps.

I have read reviews and was really scared - what have we done - but when we got there, what a fab place.

My husband was in a wheelchair and the staff were excellent. Only one drink at the bar - not at all. I was allowed to get his - ask at the reception.

We were also upgraded to a superior room at no extra cost thanks to the manager. The room was great with jacuzzi, really clean, beds made every day, cleaned and the food was also very good. Not noisy or dirty as others had said. I would go back to the Columbus again.

The weather was not too good though, rather cloudy and windy but on the whole a great place to stay.

There were 12 lads and what a great time time we had. Near to the beach and all the night life.

The hotel, yes, the food was ok. The one drink per person was a bit annoying but I suppose the hotel were just looking after their business as there are people who are not all inclusive in the hotel. We were on the third floor facing the road. Yes, it was busy but you are in middle of town. Most of the staff were OK, especially the security guard during the day - he was always very helpful. The beds are not very comfortable.

The one improvement they need to make is the snacks. One of the lads went for a snack and they offered him cake. Where were the sandwiches? And they were very rude about it too Some of the staff need to go on a customer services course.

Just got back from the Columbus hotel and my husband and I had a brilliant time! The food was great and had a varied selection every meal time.

The activities in the day are really fun. We played rifle shooting, table tennis, volley ball and darts.

The hotel was clean and maids cleaned the room every day. We were situated right above the night club but as the music was only on a Friday and Saturday night, we didn't mind.

The drinks bar was OK but you can only get one drink at a time which is understandable. The snacks were good and there were hot dogs and toasties available. I would recomend this hotel to anyone!

Should always try to be positive and make the most of a holiday, but the Columbus was truly dreadful. Stayed half-board but the food was so awful we were forced to eat out every night.

Noise levels were beyond a joke - we were initially on first floor facing the road above the entrance and could not sleep at all until eventually got to move rooms away from night-club/road/hotel entrance. Now nobody goes on holiday to be tucked up in bed by 11 every night, but this was ridiculous! (not much better even after moving to sixth floor in other block thanks to drunken 'revellers' shouting, banging doors and throwing up etc.). Staff generally unhelpful and unfriendly (as was our rep).

Playa de Las Americas has nice areas, but stay away from the vile 'Veronica's strip' area, unless you think Blackpool is classy. Thankfully the far more pleasant Los Cristianos is only 15 minute walk away.

Stayed at this hotel for one week. Been to Tenerife for 12 years now and stayed here all inclusive. No issues with cleaning, staff were a bit solemn until you chatted to them, then they chilled a treat!

Agree about one drink rule - was a bit of a nuisance but there's only so much you can drink before becoming a pain and we met a few guys that were, let's say, 'endulging' so it can't have been that bad getting a drink!

Great tattoo studio below - highly recommended from personal experience!

Review title: "Holiday From Hell"
Travel date: June 2007
Columbus – Hotel from hell! Do not go and do not go all inclusive! Cancel or change hotels if you can!

Good Points:
1. Great for clubbers, pool large and clean but not hot as the two blocks of the hotel shade over the pool area
2. Suitable for self catering. Definitely do not go half board or all inclusive!!
3. The rooms were clean and spacious, studios very nice, beds comfortable

Bad Points:

1. Do not recommend. We were a family of five (two adults and three children) and we were thrown out after two days for offering our sister a sip of fanta..
2. Staff unfriendly, rude and hotel manager awful. We were humiliated and were treated like second class citizens. If you were all inclusive, you were not allowed to sit in the hotel's lounge and have your drink.
3. I would only suggest staying here if you want to be very close to the strip in Playa de Las Americas and if you wear ear plugs as the noise in this hotel is unbearable.
4. There are two blocks to this hotel. Block 1 is very loud as it faces the main road and Block 2 looks out onto residential flats
5. Food and drink on half board or all inclusive is a joke. If you have booked this hotel, then if it is possible change it. The Playazul apartments are very nice and clean
6. The food is not that nice and not a lot of choice. Drink on all inclusive is horrendous. Only one drink per person, only one bar out of three that you can use and that is right at the back of the hotel. Snack bar is pathetic – one croissant if you are lucky and the dinner is very poor, a bun and a bit of chicken and salad. The all inclusive bar is not open between 6.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. – pathetic and if you both want a drink you have to go individually. By the time you have walked there and queued up you will need another drink.
7. Entertainment is dreadful; nothing for younger children at all even the so called mini disco was just piped music and started at 9.30 p.m. - too late. The all inclusive bar shuts at 11 p.m. and the adult entertainment (although I never watched any of this) didn't start until 11.30 p.m. - absolutely ridiculous. The hotel is just trying to make money out of its guests all the time. The day time entertainment was literally one hour of rifle shooting at about 1.30 p.m. and that is it.
8. The view out of a lot of the balconies was facing residential apartments but very few had pool views. The noise from the outside bar was horrendous and there was loud music until the early hours.
9. When we stayed there was a music festival - loud music all day and night for two days as there were nightclubs just across the road.
10. There are much nicer hotels and apartments in which to stay.
11. Los Cristianos is a much quieter and prettier place to stay.

Great! Such a pleasant surprise! Hotel/aparthotel was thoroughly cleaned daily. Room was excellent with mini kitchen with table and large balcony overlooking the lovely large pool. Great selection for breakfast - lovely food. Great location, many bars and restaurants nearby. (Please just note pay as go TV and no air con - but who wants to stay in the room when Tenerife is fantastic) The cleanliness, room, location and pool were top class.

Review title: "Worst Holiday"
Travel date: March 2007
Just got back from the Columbus. Stayed on an all-inclusive basis but we and all others felt second class. Only one bar serving all drinks, hot and cold, in plastic beakers always, not just by the pool. Only one drink per person served i.e. husband couldn't get one for me. Sister got vodka and coke but it was too strong so asked for another coke to dilute. Was told 'you've had your drink'.

Staff really need customer care training. When you complain are told it's hotel policy and if you don't like it, you know what you can do. Reception gave two girls an electronic entry card for another room without verifying if it was their room. The upshot was guests were robbed but when they complained, the manager said it was nothing to do with them and then kicked them out of the hotel! Cost them £100 for another hotel for their last night.

Very noisy with traffic throughout the night, plus disco under hotel. Only got two good nights sleep. Noise from disco didn't stop one morning till 6:30 a.m. Food was a poor selection and always cold. Ate out three nights and drank outside every night. Glad it was only for a week. Everyone all inclusive not happy. Resort was great.

We have just returned from the Columbus after our stay of one week. Found most facilities very good but felt more could be done by the hotel regarding guests reserving (but not actually using) sun beds. Other hotels we have stayed at gather beds at night and chain them together until pools open the following day. Gaudi needs more help in his snack bar!

Stayed there this year in May. Close enough to shops and Veronicas but far enough away as not to be affected by noise. Friendly staff and helpful. Clean hotel for three star and plenty to do.

Would go back. Just the usual Tenerife nuisances, i.e., scratch cards and people trying to sell you sun glasses in the dark for a small fortune.

First floor, main road side room was terrible. Although the room was visually clean, the noise was unbearable from the road and disco club underneath.

There is plenty of entertainment in the bar and pool area. Food from the restaurant was expensive compared to other places on the street and probably the worst I have ever attempted to eat.

Playa De Las Americas is fine if you want cheap beer and plenty of restaurant choices and don't mind being hassled by street sellers and British wasters trying to con you out of money with pathetic scratch cards! Be aware of restaurants adding items to your bill. Five out of the seven we went to did just that in the hope we wouldn't notice!

Hire a car and see inside the island - it's beautiful!

The Columbus Hotel was amazing, perfect for me and my best mate! The pool was gorgeous and had a bar which was great for topping up from the night before! I loved it so much I moved out there for a month and half but it wasn't the same without my mate. Will definitely go back for a holiday!

Make sure you go over to block two on the roof top where they have got two bubbly pools but be warned, its boiling up there so make sure you have got your flip flops.

Excellent location for going out to the local pubs and resturants. Didn't eat at the hotel but there were plenty of options available if you don't want to go out. Good supermarket on site. There are far more expensive options out there but this was fine for us and is highly recommended.
