Against most peoples' views, I found the Monteverde hotel perfectly fine. My room was cleaned everyday and beds made etc. Everything was kept clean. The pool was clean and open at sensible hours. The food I saw no problem with and the shops were close by to walk to. The staff were very polite and helpful. Good toilet facilities and leisure/arcade games in the bar. Every room was appropriately sized and fully equipped with necessary furniture. If asked, would I stay there again, I would say yes, definitely .

We spent a week at the Monteverde hotel in September. It is an absolute dump. Every English person there was moaning but no staff spoke English. The food was awful. We spent a fortune eating out every night. The entertainment is poor. The rooms don't have any air conditioning.

The only thing we enjoyed was the company of the English people we met round the pool. There are no facilities whatsoever for children. The bar in the lounge is not open in the day. Thankfully we had our own kettle in the room so we could make a drink. All the English hated it. The staff were so rude it was unbelievable.

The hotel seemed OK on first impression. Once we got into our room, it was a totally different story. The place was covered in ants. I went to complain, but got nowhere, so had to go down town to the resort to sort the problem out myself.

The food in the hotel is absolutely terrible. I would not feed it to the local cats which were everywhere in the hotel. Flies were in every basket of rolls, on the food etc. It was terrible.

Most of the staff were very rude and so unhelpful, you felt as though you were putting them out when asking for anything. When we left our suitcases in the room at the side of the reception desk, there were cockroaches all over the place; the receptionist was eating his lunch in this room.

The pool had not been cleaned for a long time, my children's ears were full of dirt from it. We were lucky they did not get ear infections, so down the beach we went, which was beautiful. On the last day, after many people complained, the handyman put something in the pool and made a half hearted attempt to clean it, but he did not know what he was doing.

I have never complained about a hotel before, but this hotel is a joke. I would not recommend it to anyone. The resort was lovely, but the hotel made Fawlty Towers look like Buckingham Palace.

We arrived around 9.00 a.m. but no-one told us breakfast was served until 10.00 a.m. The room was clean but others on our bus were not so lucky – five adults to a room. We unpacked and went looking for something to eat. The road to town is very busy and a two foot barrier saves you from the traffic. (It is the main road to the Caves of Drach). The beach was nice and you're able to find a space!

Dinnertime – what a nightmare! There was no menu, massive queues, very little choice and about 80 14 year old students in the hotel, but they could have taught manners to some of the adults. The dining room was like faulty towers. No-one there to clear tables, one person in bar but at least 80 people in restaurant at one time.

That night was a karaoke with the students. We stayed until Monday and I ‘phoned and paid to be moved to Cala Bona. There were no reps available from Goldtrail holidays. I have never heard so many people complaining while on holiday. Never again

The hotel was very disappointing. The rooms were not ready and not enough beds. We were on half board basis but food was a dog's dinner. There were no tags telling what you were eating, you had to just taste and guess.

The pool was only cleaned once in the week, the reception staff were not helpful. My son ended up in hospital with a gastro bug and reception couldn't give me a number for a doctor. It took three hours to get him to hospital from getting someone to translate to reception.

Not a good holiday. There was no entertainment or nothing for kids. You can't buy cold milk from a fridge, which my son, who isn't two yet, drinks or proper diluting juice. You have to travel 15 minutes away to get nappies or calpol. Thankfully I had enough. I would recommend going self catering as there are plenty of restaurants that are reasonable but all close at 8.00 p.m. If you are travelling here with babies, then take baby milk, food and nappies as it costs too much in taxis to get to the supermarket.

Even though this hotel has only two stars, it is in serious need a shake up. Its staff are rude, the food is very poor and the jacuzzi was a health hazard.

Thank goodness for the local bar down the road. The 'Alibi' bar served great snacks and a good range of local and English beers and spirits. Well done Dave and Shirley who run the bar and who made my holiday.

We arrived early hours in the morning and there was no where to get a snack.

Everywhere down in the town closed at seven every night, it was like ghost town! You could get a taxi into many places at night but the only way you would know about this was asking other visitors.

The staff were grumpy and very unhelpful. They were counting how many drinks you had every night.

The jacuzzi needs a health check and the gym contains three pieces of equipment. The activities was non existent and the entertainment was awful (A dj that played the same music every night), we made our own fun!

The food was edible but was not really to standard. There is no air conditioning in the rooms which were very stuffy!
The rooms were cleaned MOST days.

Our holiday was intended to be a quiet one, we could not have foreseen how quiet. My husband is disabled and uses two walking sticks to get around. Our first instinct was far from favourable as access to the dining room and the pool terrace appeared to only have steps and ramps that we could only describe as the cresta run. We did however decide to at least give the hotel a chance.

To be fair, our room was clean and pleasant and during our visit to the dining room, conversing with staff and other holidaymakers, we discovered that lifts were available to the dining area and to the pool terrace. The only disappointment was the total lack of entertainment. We had taken this holiday to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary and had hoped for a little entertainment but the best that they could provide was a television that was set on a foreign channel. We were very fortunate to have the company of some very friendly guests who provided a sing song and a game of bingo.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. This Hotel offers a very good central base for the able bodied but is not the ideal place for the physically challenged.

Arrived 11.30 pm. Not a thing could be found to eat. We found this unacceptable, considering this was all inclusive. Staff were counting drinks and how many glasses were on your table (you thought they were paying ) and were not very helpful at all.

Unless you spoke to other guests about places to visit, attractions etc.,. you had to fend for yourselves.

Breakfast were good but the rest of the food was below standard.

Porto cristo closed at seven each night. Hotel entertainment/sports were non existent. Invalid accesability only if you asked, i.e some guests were on crutches/walking sticks and were not informed of lifts/ramp access to dining room, to get to which you had to leave the hotel via steps along to dining room via steps, when there was a rear entrance without having to use steps.

I and three friends stayed for five days at the Monteverde on a golfing trip and found the accomodation provided for us excellent. The hearty self-service breakfast set us up for a good days golfing. The rooms were clean and spacious and the staff could not have been more helpful. Although it was still early season, an enjoyable time was had by all.

The hotel overall was good, the rooms are good, its centrally located but the food wasn't great. Staff were helpful and friendly, especially Tony behind reception.

There is no real night life in Porto Cristo which was disappointing but a short taxi ride is available to take you to nearby Cala D'Or or Cala Ratjada which are good for bars etc.

Review title: "Great Holiday"
Travel date: July 2004
This holiday was booked on teletext two weeks before departure. We did not know what to expect, but on arrival we were pleasantly surprised. We had two rooms overlooking the pool, the rooms were tastefully decorated, the bathrooms were a bit on the small side but had excellent showers. The rooms were cleaned nearly every day.
The pool was cleaned regularly and there was a good pool bar service. We enjoyed the food but plenty of other people complained about it. The entertainment was ok.

These opinions are those of HotelStreet visitors and not of HotelStreet.
