"Marina Corfu"

June 2007
We are off to the Marina Corfu twice again this year June and September 2008 and this will be our 13/14th visit over the last twenty years or so. We have tried various other places, both in Europe and long haul, but nothing compares to the Marina Corfu and its friendly staff.
The hotel had a refit in 2005, which included long overdue air conditioning being fitted in every room. There was already a substantial swimming pool with bar, snacks and two steps off the beach, but now they have put in a smaller pool too on the other bar/patio, which is easier to keep an eye on the kids, yet still looks over the beach and has ample sunbeds. Cala Egos beach, which is where the hotel, and its sister, the Skorpios Hotel is situated, has quite a few shops, bars, restaurants etc, but if you prefer, a five euro taxi ride, or a three euro road train ride, takes you to the main resort of Cala d'Or (best resort in Mallorca by far). Or, do as we do and take a leisurely stroll around the harbour into the resort of Cala d'Or. It takes between half an hour - to as long as you like to walk it, dependant on how many times you stop to stare in awe at the luxurious yachts. You might even get lucky and have your picture taken with Michael Schumacher, Phil Collins, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mick Jagger and not to mention royalty – any of them can be there at any time – but be prepared to fantasize and think: 'Where did I go wrong in life?'
Food at the hotel is second to none, especially the breakfasts. Snacks all day, drinks all day, never having to dip into your pockets for ice creams, lollies, pop, crisps etc for the kids. You could literally go there without a penny in your pocket and still have the best time ever.
Only one down side, if I have to make any kind of criticism, and that is: If you have young children or are elderly/disabled, the only way down to the beach (unless you take a walk all the way round the hotel) is by way of steps (about 40 of them) from the bar patio area. These steps are steep, concrete and sometimes slippy when wearing flip-flops and are open at the top with no gate/barrier. You need to be extra vigilant, with young children especially, as the lure of the beach and all its activities acts like a magnet to them and they want to get there – down those concrete steps. We have seen one or two pretty nasty falls over the years and I'm sure there must have been many worse than we ourselves have witnessed.
Overall though – fantastic! You will be hard pushed to find better – I challenge you!
