Not recommended! Got to these apartments mid-afternoon and the reception was closed as it was everyday from 12-2! The taxi driver that brought us from the airport proceeded to bang on the reception window and told the guy in there to come out and let us get into our apartments! We then, after much deliberation, got our key. We then asked if there was a key for the patio doors and we were told they do not get locked, at which my boyfriend was rather fuming!

Then after this, we got into our room which was very small although it was clean. Terrace was a good size and the views were amazing!

I honestly would not recommend staying at the Palmeramar as the staff were obnoxious to us on a number of occasions and made us feel very unwelcome! The weather was lovely very hot! No air conditioning made it impossible to sleep in the apartments. We did hire a couple of fans but they weren't very good!

Anyway I would highly recommended going to Puerto Rico as its brilliant. I have been a few times now.

Review title: "Palmera Mar"
Travel date: August 2006
Arrival: Arrived at the Palmera Mar at 9.10 p.m to be met by a rather unfriendly member of staff. He refused to cash any travellers cheques because reception closed at 9 p.m. Luckily, have been to Puerto Rico before so knew where to go to cash cheques. Modern lift system in operation.

Apartment: Very clean. Separate door for terrace and for entry into apartment. Would only recommend that two people could live in the apartment because they are not spacious enough for four people. Have to put room key in wall to allow electrics to work. So don't forget your key. Bedroom has two single beds, a wardrobe (not many hangers) and a dressing table with mirror. Bathroom is really small with toilet directly beside the bath (only a dwarf could bathe in it). However, there is a powerful shower in the bath. Towels are changed daily except from Thursday and Saturday and only if left on the floor. Large mirror in bathroom which tends to steam up quickly. Small fridge with a freezer box at top. Did not use any of the kitchen facilities. The coin operated TV was very small (14 inches) and didn't work, even after the repair man had come out. Terrace has table and four chairs. No parasol or loungers. View from balcony looking onto Amadores beach was amazing.

Pool: There are three pool areas including a jacuzzi. All of which looked very clean. Only visited the pool bar on one occasion after waiting an hour for a toastie and even ignoring that fact, that the Spanish guy working on the bar seemed never to wash his hands whilst smoking and working etc. Be warned: Lots of Spanish holidaymakers staying at Palmera Mar and making lots of noise. Pool supposed to close at 9 p.m. but Spanish still in the pool into the early hours of next morning. Also, noticed that Spanish people parked their cars outside Palmera Mar and just walked in and used the pool etc. For this reason only went to pool one day.

Staff: Only two staff worked on reception. Both very unhelpful and rude. For instance, insisted could not cash cheques because they had no money but the till was basically overflowing and another day the guy finally agreed after scowling and storming off to find a pen. Reception only opened from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - 9 .p.m. Don't worry. If you go to the top of the hill next to the taxi rank you will find Altamar Apartments that are happy to cash cheques any time and give you a better exchange rate too.

Food: Didn't eat at the apartments. The restaurant never seemed to be open. ‘Barbacoas' - guaranteed to have a great meal. Ate there everyday.

Beach: Amardores is far the best beach. Two sun loungers and parasol only seven euros. Don't enjoy the sand, then there are sun loungers on the pier with a cool sea breeze. Pedaloes are only eight euros to hire for an hour. Great fun.

Night: Preferred the Europa centre to the main Puerto Rico centre. Don't get any hassle from guys selling sun glasses, Chinese women selling fans that light up with matching earrings or just random people trying to sell you stuff. ‘Reillys/Hoops' is good though. Ideal for clubbing. Also for junk food lovers you will find McDonalds, Indian and Chinese restaurants here. Europa – ‘Barbacoas', ‘Turbos', ‘Yates' and other pubs. Not too overcrowded, relaxed atmosphere. Taxis only three euros from apartment to beach and main centre of Puerto Rico.

Would not return to Palmera Mar - best advice - stay at Altamar!

Review title: "Palmera Mar Apartments Fantastic"

Although these apartments are only one key, they are fantastic! In a quiet location but only ten minutes walk uphill to Europa centre. The view from the huge balcony overlooks the Amadores beach and is breathtaking. Apartment was cleaned on a daily basis. Found this to be unusual. Pool area is spotless. Going back to these apartments next year. Highly recommend them.

This was my first holiday abroad on my own with my eight year old daughter and as you can imagine, I was worried. However, I needn't have been. The apartments were in a great location, the staff on reception couldn't do enough for us, the poolside bar stayed open way into the early hours if we wanted, rooms were cleaned and towels changed daily which was a big surprise and bonus.

I thought being high up on the hillside would be a worry but my daughter was more than happy to stay by the poolside all day. We only took the short taxi ride (2.50 euros) to the beach twice in two weeks. No entertainment on site but that was not a problem as we just walked to the Europa centre which is ideal for adults and children.

We will be back this year definitely, my daughter doesn't want to go anywhere else and I don't blame her. All rooms have a sea view which is wonderful to wake up to every day. For a budget break, I would recommend these apartments without hesitation.
