"What A Shame - Please Don't Go"
Travel date:
January 2008
Well, we had high hopes upon first arrival in the nicely decorated reception but unfortunately the all-inclusive element of our holiday was a complete let down.
The breakfast was fine although sometimes on the cold side when the food should have been warm. The main let down was the lunch menu and evening buffet. Lunch consisted of a choice of three meals. Ham toasties, hamburger or a chicken burger - the same three options each day. The chicken in the chicken burger was tiny compared to the size of the bun probably less than a third of the bun size. The evening buffet was predominately Chinese food which some of our party didn't like. Spicy chicken one night, spicy beef the next, spicy chicken the following night and, well, you get my drift. Whilst eating the guy who ran the restaurant watched your every move to ascertain how much you were taking from the buffet breakfasts and evening meals.
The bar was supposed to be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. It generally shut at 9.30 p.m. The snacks during the day were non existent and consisted of drinks only. Lemonade, coke, water, lager or very cheap house wine.
Although other people have said their apartments were fine, they were okay, but ours was only cleaned once and actually had to go and ask for this to happen. One change of towels and a clean around the apartment all week.
The Kon Tiki Club hotel was on a very step hill which the locals nickname 'Cardiac Hill' and to make matters worse, there were steps all over the place. Not ideal for wheelchairs or buggies and we saw several families struggling. To actually get to the restaurant my parents, who are in their late 50s, and one suffering from poorly hips had to climb 50+ steps. Not ideal really.
We had a great time on our holiday because you make the best of what you got but we spent far more than we'd intended or indeed even had available to spend because the food and refreshments were so poor. If you go all-inclusive then please take extra cash with you to help you pay for the food you'll undoubtedly have to purchase.

"Don't Go"

Kon Tiki Club hotel was clean, rooms good if self catering but be warned, it is not all inclusive. Bar open seven hours and and food no choice but grease, grease and more grease. No three course choice with choices, just one option. Disgrace. Never saw anything like it. We asked for a sea view - believe me, you will get none of it. I moved and I am awaiting compensation. Self catering fine, but not all inclusive!

"Kontiki Is Excellent"

Kontiki Apartments are excellent as long as you go self-catering and not all inclusive, which seemed to be a bit of a disaster. The apartments are spotlessly clean, maid service five times a week, everything you need in the kitchen for a self-catering holiday, with spacious rooms and if you are lucky enough to have an apartment overlooking the pool, a lovely view of the sea. They are close to the beach and within easy reach of lots of bars and restaurants.
If you do go, you must visit 'The Rambler', an English-run cafe bar and restaurant serving excellent home made food which is excellent value for money.

"Third Time Visiting Apartments"

This is the third time we have stayed in the Kontiki and it is a wonderful apartment complex with a great location. Staff so friendly and helpful, rooms spotless not a creepy crawly in sight, inside or out, pool area cleaned every evening and food limited but good. Could not fault this complex and cannot wait to go back.

Warning for people going all inclusive at Kontiki Club hotel.
The hotel is on 'Cardiac Hill' which we knew about and for people that don't have walking problems its no problem. The view you get from the sun terrace is beautiful and you can look out to sea.
The rooms are well kept and the swimming pool is nice and you can always get a sun bed. The problem was because the hotel sub-lease their restaurant, you don't get locally produced spirits, don't get ice cream, the bar was open at 12 and closed 10 p.m and there is no entertainment. Food was rubbish. Don't expect usual all inclusive. We are asking for compensation from travel agent as had to eat out!

"Kontiki Apartments Are Brilliant But Don't Go All Inclusive"
Travel date:
August 2007
We stayed at the Kontiki (self-catering)in August 2007 and can highly recommend them - the apartments are spotlessly clean with maid service almost every day, everything you need in the kitchen with good-sized bedrooms. You do have to climb 'Cardiac Hill' to get to these apartments but it is worth it and there are short cuts if need be.
The only down side was that the bar closed too early (sometimes 8 o'clock) and the snacks there were not very good. But if you go, don't go all inclusive as this definitely was a shambles. The staff didn't speak English and the visitors who arrived whilst we were there had to complain every day. So, if you do visit Kontiki, please go self-catering and you will have a really good holiday. There is a lovely pool, plenty of sunbeds, good location and plenty of sunshine.

"Avoid All Inclusive"
Travel date:
August 2007
This is a difficult one so I thought best sum it up with good points and bad points as follows:
Good: lovely hotel - very clean, well equipped, excellent location, plenty of sun loungers; nice food
Bad: no welcome pack on arrival so not informed of amenities, dinner times etc; hotel staff speak no English - even the simplest things like straw and butter could not be understood; food choice was very poor - I was all inclusive and expected a selection of starters, main and deserts but got no starters to choose from, a choice of pasta, beef, chicken or fish for main and tinned fruit as the only choice for desert; no entertainment - not even a pathetic quiz or game of bingo; unfriendly staff - I never saw one crack a smile the whole time we were there!; bar shuts at 10 p.m. - not a second after.
Looking at the above it appears that the bad points clearly outweigh the good. I think our main problem was being all inclusive as we found ourselves in a catch 22 situation - we either sat in silence staring into the bottom of a glass to drink what we had already paid for or we left the hotel in search of something livelier, making the holiday a very expensive one. My advice is if you have to go to this Kontiki Club hotel avoid the all inclusive option as you will only be disappointed.
We relied on the 'Toby Jug' for our evening entertainment which I would highly recommend for a bit of family fun and they also do a delicious roast.

"Kontiki Club Apartments Brilliant"

March 2006
This apartment was excellent on arrival. We were greeted with a smile, shown to our room where a bottle of champagne was waiting for us. The apartment was lovely. The views are brill, the staff friendly and helpful. Apartment cleaned daily, beds made and towels changed. They even washed up the dishes.
Only one small problem - Cardic Hill. It is steep but it only takes about three minutes to get up and another three to catch your breath but overall I will be going back to the Kontiki. Best apartments I ever stayed in.

Oh my goodness! The Kon Tiki apartments were amazing! We try our best to go to Lanzarote every year and ever since we have thought about going back to the Kon Tiki. We haven't yet, but you would never know! All the staff were very helpful and polite!
One problem – Heart Attack Hill as we called it, ha ha! It was steep and easy enough to climb if you are not drunk! Ha ha
Well we're going back to Lanzarote in October (2007) (bit late to be writing the review) ha ha! Well go to 'Murphy's' Irish pub every night, so look out! We are on the way!
